By week 30 of my pregnancy, I was getting weekly emails reminding me to pack my hospital bag. Of course I procrastinated (like how I announced we were pregnant a day before I went into labor) and ended up pulling everything together minutes before driving to the hospital. I was four days past my due date and was pretty positive I would never have this baby! I was so afraid of being turned away at the hospital that I made Merik leave the bag in the truck “so we didn’t look dumb”. 🤦🏼♀️ Clearly was in a strange state of denial! After going through a fairly quick but intense labor, Merik was able to grab the bag and bring it up to Mom & Baby and all was well. Here is a list of things that I packed, and some others that I wish I had after the fact!
The Bag
I am obsessed with my hospital bag. Cuyana sent me their beautiful Triple Zipper Weekender to use and I’ve been looking for excuses to use it ever since.
The bag is not only beautiful, but can fit SO much while keeping things organized. I wanted to overpack just to use all of the pockets this bag has! The shoulder strap help keep you hands free while you’re waddling into the hospital. A big plus if you’re being wheeled in by your husband or collapsing from contractions.
For Mama
I didn’t pack much for myself. I made sure I had everything I needed to feel clean and comfortable for my stay.
- A robe: Cuyana also sent me this robe! It has so much stretch and is incredibly soft. It was so nice to slip in and out of while nursing, and wasn’t a hassle on the many bathroom trips.
- A nursing bra: I packed this nursing bra (it was really comfortable during pregnancy), but it wasn’t a favorite for nursing. With my milk coming in it barely covered my boobs and with how messy nursing was, I would’ve preferred a clip down. I love these Lively nursing bras – I have a few different colors now! I couldn’t recommend these bras more!
- Dry shampoo: too tired and lazy to shower? Dry shampoo will save your life!
- Body lotion
- Chapstick
- Gum: Your cotton mouth will thank you later.
- Pillows: I brought a pillow from our bed and one to sit on! Hospital beds are NOT comfy, so bring what you need to survive the first 24-48 hours. The hospital didn’t provide me with a donut cushion and I really wish I had one while in there.
- Face wipes: see above about being too lazy to shower. These are a personal favorite!
- Slippers: some people bring slippers they can wear in the shower. I wore Birkenstocks to the hospital (this site has so many pairs for under $100!) and packed some socks for walking around the hospital room. Sue me if that’s gross!
- Going home outfit: I’ve seen so many people wearing dresses to the hospital, but those aren’t super convenient with nursing. I found a few sets that I loved and lived in for the first few weeks postpartum.
For Baby
We didn’t pack a lot for baby. We didn’t know if it was a boy or girl, so we didn’t have anything too over-the-top. The hospital provides you with A LOT. Don’t overpack or worry too much about gathering everything for your little one.
- Coming home outfit: we brought this cute one from Pehr. Gender neutral and so cozy!
- Car seat: we decided to get the Nuna Pipa. It works with and without the base which is ideal for traveling! It’s lightweight and sleek.
- Swaddle: the hospital will provide you with one, but they’re pretty stiff and small.
Other Things
- A blanket and pillows for your partner! If you think hospital beds are uncomfortable, just wait for the cots.
- Entertainment: if you’re needing to kill time and are relatively pain free, I’d bring a nice book or headphones!
- Snacks: I was so exhausted the next day that hospital food was hitting the spot, but make sure you pack some of your favorite treats for a little *me* time!
